Engineered wood includes a range of wood products which are manufactured by binding of fixing strands, particles, fibers, or boards of wood together with adhesives, or other methods to form composite materials. Engineered wood products are designed to precise design specifications and are used in a variety of applications. Among the list of engineered wood products: plywood, medium density fibreboard (MDO), oriented strand board (OSB), glued laminated timber (glulam), laminated veneer lumber (LVL), cross laminated timber (CLT), parallel strand lumber PSL), finger jointed lumber, I-joists, and trusses., etc. |
Fire Retardant Treated Engineered Wood Products |
There is a great deal of confusion surrounding fire retardant treatments that can be applied to wood products. Several manufacturers have tested their products and have received code approval for use on framing lumber and plywood, however they have not been approved for other engineered wood products. However, Flame Safe's proprietary fire retardant treatment for engineered wood products (EWP) have been tested to comply with the ASTM E84, ASTM E2768, ANSI/UL723 standard and classfied by Intertek Testing Services for EWP such as OSB, I-joist composite, laminated veneers such as LVL and PSL, and glulam composites. Flame Safe treated EWP's performs extraordinarily well achieving flame spread and smoke deveopment ratings far below the standardS set forth in the UL723 and the ASTM E84 with flame spread ratings as low as 0 and smoke devlopment ratings as low as 40. |

1. Flame Safe warrants all of it's flame retardant products including EWPs to perform as tested. 2. Flame Safe's fire retardant treated wood products have been tested, classified and approved for engineered wood. 3. Flame Safe's fire retardant engineered wood treated with it's proprietary method and testing will meet building code requirements as well as local building codes recognizing specific Flame Safe treatments based on the ASTM E84, Class A, the ANSI/UL723, Type 1 standards and the ASTM E2768 (30 minute extended test method). 4. Fire retardant treated plywood and other engineered wood products require strength reductions to be taken per the table listed in each manufacturer’s code approval. Flame Safe EWP has a design value adjustment of .975 based on the manufacturer's table listing. |
